Ingredients

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 carrot, finely diced

1 celery stalk, finely diced

1 pound (450g) ground beef (or a combination of beef and pork for added flavor)

1 cup (240ml) red wine (optional, for depth of flavor)

1 can (14 oz/400g) crushed tomatoes

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1 bay leaf

Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

1 cup (240ml) milk (for a creamier sauce)

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish (optional)

Grated Parmesan cheese, for serving

Instructions

Sauté the Vegetables: In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, diced carrot, and diced celery. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes or until the vegetables are softened and the onion is translucent.

Brown the Meat: Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground meat. Using a wooden spoon, break the meat apart and cook it until browned and fully cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Ensure that there is no pink remaining in the meat.

Deglaze with Wine: If you choose to use it, carefully pour in the red wine. Scrape the brown bits from the bottom of the pan with a spatula; this will add great flavor to your sauce. Allow it to reduce for about 3-4 minutes, letting the alcohol evaporate.

Add Tomatoes and Spices: Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste, followed by the dried oregano, dried basil, and bay leaf. Season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper, then bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

Simmer and Develop Flavor: Lower the heat to low, partially cover the pan, and allow the sauce to simmer for at least 30-45 minutes. Stir occasionally; the longer you simmer, the more the flavors will deepen and intensify.

Incorporate Milk: About 5 minutes before serving, gently stir in the milk. This addition will create a creamier texture and help balance the sauce’s acidity, enhancing its richness.

Taste and Adjust: Before serving, remove the bay leaf and taste the sauce. Adjust the seasoning, adding more salt or pepper as desired.

Serve: Cook your spaghetti according to the package instructions. Once cooked, drain the pasta and serve it generously topped with the Bolognese sauce. For an elegant touch, garnish with fresh basil leaves and a generous sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese. Enjoy your culinary masterpiece!
