Ingredients

12 oz penne pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, diced

3 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce

1 teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (a blend of basil, oregano, and thyme)

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup fresh basil leaves, chopped

Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a touch of heat)

Extra fresh basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or a drizzle of olive oil to prevent sticking.

Cook the Pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a rolling boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, typically about 8-10 minutes. Once cooked, drain the pasta and set aside.

Sauté the Aromatics: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, or until fragrant and golden.

Prepare the Sauce: In the same skillet, add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, sugar, and dried Italian herbs. Pour in the heavy cream, then season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Bring this mixture to a gentle simmer and let it cook for about 10 minutes, allowing all the flavors to meld beautifully.

Combine the Ingredients: Remove the skillet from heat. Stir in the cooked pasta, half of the grated Parmesan cheese, and the chopped fresh basil into the tomato sauce, mixing until the pasta is thoroughly coated.

Transfer to the Baking Dish: Carefully pour the creamy pasta mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Top with the remaining grated Parmesan cheese and the shredded mozzarella cheese, ensuring an even layer over the top.

Bake the Dish: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, golden, and bubbly.

Cool and Serve: Once you take the pasta bake out of the oven, allow it to cool for about 5-10 minutes for easier serving. Before plating, garnish with extra fresh basil leaves to give a pop of color and fresh flavor.
