Ingredients

1 block (14 oz) firm tofu, pressed and drained

1/2 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour, if preferred)

1/2 cup cornstarch

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

1/2 cup unsweetened plant milk (or regular milk)

2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari

1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch or regular)

1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped (optional for garnish)

1/4 cup nutritional yeast (optional, adds a cheesy flavor)

Cooking oil for frying (such as vegetable or canola oil)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu: Begin by cutting the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes or nugget shapes. You can choose to slice them thicker for heartier pieces, depending on your preference.

Make the Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the unsweetened plant milk and soy sauce until well combined. In a separate bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper—ensuring a uniform blend of dry ingredients.

Bread the Tofu: Take each piece of tofu and first dip it into the seasoned flour mixture, lightly coating it. Then, immerse it in the milk mixture, allowing any excess liquid to fall back into the bowl. Finally, press the tofu into the breadcrumbs, making sure to cover it thoroughly by gently squeezing the breadcrumbs onto the tofu for optimal adherence.

Add Fresh Herbs: If you are using fresh parsley and nutritional yeast, sprinkle these over the breaded tofu nuggets to infuse them with extra flavor and nutrition. Make sure each nugget is evenly coated for a vibrant taste.

Heat the Oil: In a large skillet, pour in enough cooking oil to cover the bottom with about 1/4 inch depth. Heat over medium-high heat until the oil shimmers and a small amount of the batter sizzles upon contact.

Fry the Nuggets: Carefully place the breaded tofu nuggets into the hot oil, taking care not to overcrowd the skillet. Fry them in batches for approximately 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they achieve a rich golden-brown color and a crispy texture.

Drain and Serve: Once the nuggets are cooked, transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil. Serve immediately while warm alongside your favorite dipping sauces, such as sweet chili sauce or a zesty garlic aioli.

Enjoy!: Finish off with a sprinkle of extra chopped parsley if desired, and savor your crispy garlic herb tofu nuggets as a delightful snack, appetizer, or a satisfying addition to any meal!
